Recently there was a back lash from UK employers when it was suggested in the media that they should support their staff and provided them with paid time off for “smoking cessation” services. This was part of a range of measures being recommended to businesses by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE).

As non-smokers make fitter and healthier employees it makes sense for employers to help smokers who want to quit smoking for good. It has been shown the levels of concentration and attendance is lower amongst smokers compared to employees who don’t smoke and the related health cost for those companies offering private health care as part of the employee’s benefit package to be considerably higher.
